Our Story
Our Story:
Stanley
J's New York Style Delicatessen, established in 1988, was founded by Stanley
and Carol Tarnofsky. Stanley, a native of New Jersey, spent much of his time
around authentic delicatessens, where he learned many traditional concepts
about "New York flavor." His experience was enriched by his exposure to the
time honored secrets of his Italian ancestors.
Reaching college years, Stanley decided on a change of scenery which
b rought him to Lexington, Kentucky, where he attended Transylvania
University. While attending Transylvania he met his beautiful wife to be,
Carol Codell.
Carol
was born in Winchester, Kentucky, right next door to the city of Lexington.
She too was very experienced and cultured in many time honored cooking
traditions, but of a different nature than Stanley's. Her bloodline was rich
with Southern heritage, which she got from her mother who was as pure a
Southerner as they come. Along with these traditions, Carol also received a
huge heart and
a bright smile, which radiated hospitality to all who met
her.
Stanley
and Carol were complete opposites brought together by their different
natures; a nature that together created a staple in Lexington's palate.
Stanley passed away in 2005 and Carol moved onto other interests. Their
oldest child, Josh, is continuing his parents' legacy as he controls the
day-to-day operations of Stanley J's: the deli of "New York Flavor with
Southern Hospitality."
